Why digital PR matters in the age of AI

/ Why digital PR matters in the new SEO: when context and AI make all the difference

SEO, as those of us who've been at this a while know well, never stops reinventing itself. But in this latest phase, the shift isn't coming from simple algorithm tweaks, it's a much deeper transformation: AI-driven contextual relevance. Yes, the very thing that was supposedly going to put us all out of a job 😉.

And it really will put anyone who doesn't evolve out of a job. Some are already behind, because this revolution is displacing traditional ranking methods.

Digital PR steps into the picture as the great multiplier of authority and visibility, blending naturally into brand growth. Digital PR can be described as the communications actions carried out to shape how people feel about and perceive a brand's products or services. And that's exactly what the game is about now. Perception!

/ Relevance as the new axis of rankings

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG): SEO enters a whole new league

It's no longer enough to optimise for keywords. Search engines are using AI models that combine the best of machine learning with real-time data retrieval. RAG is redefining how information gets presented, prioritising answers that are relevant, up to date and personalised. All of this significantly affects CTR.

This means you're no longer competing just against websites, but against systems that understand context and generate content on the fly. Were you ready for this? If the answer is no, you're one of the ones already behind. Don't worry, there's still time.

According to a study by Advanced Web Ranking, which I found via Search Engine Journal, CTR shifts were observed in the following sectors in Q4 2024:

You can find the full study here.

Clear, structured, user-aligned content

Content architecture has gone from being a good practice to being absolutely essential. It's no longer about repeating keywords or having the best meta title, but about understanding how users ask questions and giving answers that make semantic sense. Content that isn't understood simply doesn't exist in the new SEO. Which is why some people say SEO is dead, when really, they're the ones who are dead in the water.

Contextual authority: beyond links

Yes, that's right. I'm Sico de Andrés. The guy who's done link building his whole career, and one of the people who's talked for years about how important link building is — but if you look back, I'm also one of those who's spent years and years talking about the importance of mentions in relevant contexts and authoritative sources, which carry real weight. In fact, that's been my trademark.

Now, we're hearing at talks in the US and in groundbreaking articles that Google is paying less attention to sheer link volume and paying more attention to who mentions you, where, and in what context. Welcome to the era of contextual authority, folks — I've been waiting here for you for a long time.

Mentions in authoritative media: when relevant outlets aligned with your topic cite your brand, AI reads that context as a "trust signal."

According to our collaborator Marcelo Rojas Guerra, AI-for-SEO specialist at Vivaconversion: "Visibility now isn't just classic SEO. It's about showing up in the sources AIs are reading and using to build their answers. That's where you need to be."

Alberto Fernández from Ingeniero SEO points out that we'll also need to keep an eye on the deals major media outlets strike with LLMs in each country. That contractual relationship could end up mattering more than any backlink campaign when it comes to showing up in generative answers.

/ What all this means for your SEO strategy

Goodbye to the old rules of link building

I'm not saying links are dead, lol. Any SEO knows they're important and will remain so.

But what actually moves the needle today is demonstrating expertise, relevance and topical consistency. A broader approach, focused on offering valuable content and building a solid reputation. In other words, stop focusing on producing "SEO content," whether on your own site or on third-party media, and focus instead on getting across the message you want, so that any person or search engine understands you're genuinely great at what you do.

This means that instead of thinking about a DR score or what title an article will have, you need to consider that this article could well be crawled by any generative-AI search engine and become a source of information about you.

As our collaborator Marcelo Rojas Guerra puts it: "You need to look at where the AI is pulling its information from. Run searches like 'best X tools' or 'ranking of Y companies.'"

The importance of digital PR

Those of us who've spent years in digital PR always knew the converging lines between SEO and digital PR would eventually meet. That moment has arrived. I'd recommend starting to build a solid digital PR component into your overall SEO strategies, through studies, press releases and real relationships with media outlets in your industry. If you've read the previous section carefully, you'll see that links aren't what they used to be, and it's time to shift your approach toward building topical authority and brand awareness. Digital PR is going to help you a lot with that.

Semantic SEO

I already touched on this at last year's SEonthebeach. Start working with topic clusters, entities, structured data, and make sure everything is semantically aligned. Rankings are no longer just about plain text.

/ Conclusion

SEO, as always, has changed (no matter when you're reading this sentence). And don't get hung up on renaming it GEO or whatever else comes to mind. I've even heard FEO used for Facebook. Search engines are everywhere, and the "S" stands for Search Engine. Whether it's a GPT, Facebook, or whatever else.

What has changed is that the rules are no longer so technical or so predictable — pure evolution driven by search engines' growing ability to "understand." Today, the winner is whoever understands context, whoever responds intelligently to what the user is looking for, and whoever knows how to build real authority, not just through links, but through presence and by building brand authority. That's why you need to bring strategies into your SEO work that build that trust, perception and reputation for your brand.

The SEO of the future — or rather, the present — rewards contextual authority, brand consistency and the ability to build trust.

Integrating digital PR into your strategy isn't a nice-to-have: it's the foundation that amplifies your SEO.
